If you have super sensitive skin like me, then I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. When I venture out into my garden to do some weeding and cleaning up, I have to do somewhat of a ritual. First, I have to put on a long sleeve shirt. If I don’t do that, I’ll start itching, and then it’s over for me. I know for sure that I’ll get a mild rash on my forearms. The rash usually looks like a trail of tiny bumps that end up itching for a few hours and then start to disappear.
To soothe that red itchy skin, I used to reach for antihistamines or hydrocortisone creams. But that was when I was unaware that there were natural alternatives.
My inquisitive mind told me to do a little research and I found quite a truckload. So that I don’t overload your brain, I’ll give you some of what I found. The alternative remedy to skin issues could already be growing outside in your garden. Here are a few alternative solutions to remedy itchy skin rashesfrom gardening.
Basil Essential Oil:
Basil is a popular herb that can be grown indoors or outdoors. I use it to make a nice Pesto for salads. Not only does it give Italian dishes that great robust flavor, but it can also provide relief to those itchy skin rashes. Basil essential oil is also great for treating wounds and skin infections due to its antibacterial properties.
It has been said that pregnant women should avoid Basil oil but that topic has a bit of controversy behind that. As with anything, always do your research first.
Rosemary Essential Oil:
Rosemary Essential Oil is another common herb that can be found in the garden also. Little did I know, but Rosemary oil had anti-inflammatory properties. Rosemary has a nice woodsy fragrance that reminds me of outdoors. It’s pretty pungent so it will kill any microbes that cause the itchiness and inflammation to occur on your sensitive skin. If any rash has created a rough and scaly appearance to the affected area, Rosemary oil can reduce that unsightly appearance.
Important: Essential oils are very potent so they must be mixed with a carrier oil. Like these: Sweet Almond, Jojoba, Avocado, Coconut, Argan, or Olive oils. You only need a few drops of essential oil to add to your carrier oil before you apply it to your skin.
Two Teaspoon of carrier oil per 2-3 drops of essential oil should be enough to banish itchy skin rash after gardening
